07/01/07 - Hashi.org is proud to announce the winner of the 1st annual Travel Scholarship! We received many, fine applications, with essays describing a variety of backgrounds – International Studies, Music, etc. – and cultural exchange interests – Student exchange, Language studies, Volunteer work, etc. But our winner is a Japanese Architecture Grad Student who is studying the architectural and cultural differences and similarities of Japan and South Korea. All three judges of the applications found our winner’s application to be the finest example of the ideals and goals of hashi.org. While there were many worthy submissions, Hashi.org is proud to award a $1,000 travel scholarship to Yoneda Sachiko! Congratulations!
The following is Ms. Sachiko's winning essay - first in English, then in Japanese:

ESSAY TRANSLATION

I have studied architecture for five years in university majoring in the City and Architect History. I had an opportunity to research in Seoul in 2006 as a university project. I learned that although Japan and Korea are neighbors, their cities are totally different, which interested me very much. I want to know where such differences come from and the city development in Korea. I want to research and weigh them with cities in Japan. I am in my second year of graduate school and I want to write a graduate thesis comparing Koren and Japanese cities.

I have to learn Korean culture, costumes, and language to write the thesis.

I plan to take leave from school to attend a language school in Korea. Meanwhile, I study its culture and cities there. After I finish the language school, I will do detailed research to write the thesis. I want to write it not only in Japanese but in Korean and publish it in Korea.

To save for study in Korea, I work for a Japanese restaurant and I wear Kimono there. The reason why I work there is to learn Japanese culture more to compare it with Korean culture. With the knowledge I have been gaining, I want to introduce Japanese culture to Korean people while I stay there. I am going to attend a language school in Seoul for six month starting in June. After the program, I plan to do fieldwork to research Korean cities and their history.

I want to use the scholarship for research expenses and cultural exchange after I finish the language school.

There have been exchanges among people in the field of architecture in Asia recently. I especially want to support the exchange between Japan and Korea.

I appreciate your consideration.
